Initially, I was asked to write a textbook on solo-librarianship in healthcare. I intended the book to be an introduction to the different duties of a Medical Librarian. However, as I began mapping it out and researching the literature, the book gradually became more of a revealing of the current atmosphere for healthcare librarians. My many years of serving on the MCMLA Library Advocacy Committee had given me contact with librarians whose libraries had been eliminated. We wrote letters to hospital administrators and had meetings discussing what could be done, but hospital libraries continued to be closed. Obviously, I couldn’t write a textbook and ignore the elephant in the room.
