The Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Comparative Effectiveness Research—what do these have to do with a healthcare librarian? We live in an information-rich world and yet the U.S. healthcare system is not utilizing a resource for maximizing delivery of medical information to the clinician. Medical literature searches and delivery of information to clinicians are the most important services performed by the healthcare librarian in support of patient care and safety. Evidence-based medicine is supported by the healthcare librarian. The barriers to practicing EB are explored, which include perceptions of doctors, lack of time and skills of hospital staff, and the cost of supporting EB.
