The Zone System works admirably for photographers who have learned how to visualize successfully, but it takes time and experience to acquire this skill. Visualization is, after all, a cerebral exercise. You have to carry in your head a rather specific vision of the various zone grays (as you interpret them) and compare these standard grays with a mental image of the subject as you’d like it to appear in the print. Not an easy task, especially for beginners.
