Big winners not only understood where to go and how to get there. They also understood how to protect the positions they occupied. Big winners created scarce and hard-to-imitate capabilities that enabled them to protect the ground they inhabited (See Table 6.1.) Their discipline was based on many different traits such as advanced manufacturing, global sourcing, acquisitions, hiring, service, distribution, technology, negotiations, project management, regulatory compliance, and sound ethics. The managerial skills to create best-value propositions allowed them to defend the positions they held.
