Bioenergy Crops

Abstract

There are a number of bioenergy crops that can be grown in America. Annual and perennial crops that are well adapted locally are being pursued in research programs at state and regional levels. First-generation ethanol crops include corn, sorghum, and sugarcane. Second generation crops include switchgrass, miscanthus, corn stover, and various woody species. One of the biggest challenges with second generation crops is handling, storing, and transporting the quantity of cellulosic biomass needed to achieve federal production mandates.
