Abstract

Fuel consumption on a tractor or self-propelled implement directly uses energy during field operations. Omitting an operation (e.g., a tillage pass) or reducing engine idle time directly stops fuel use. When tractor operation is required, techniques such as shifting up a gear and reducing engine speed, using correct ballast and tire inflation, air and fuel filter maintenance, or shallower tillage can reduce fuel use by 5–20% or more.
