Abstract

This chapter describes the use of algae biomass as a sustainable feedstock for biofuel. The brief historical perspective follows different biofuel options from algae. The start to finish process of liquid biofuel from algae involved is presented: (1) algae strain selection (different algae type), (2) algae cultivation (algae growth systems—photobioreactors, open raceways and fermenters), (3) biomass harvesting, and (4) algae oil extraction (mechanical, chemical—transesterification, enzymatic, supercritical fluid, etc.).
