Chapter 16

Thermal Gasification of Biomass – A Primer

Robert G. Jenkins     School of Engineering, College of Engineering & Mathematical Sciences, The University of Vermont, Burlington, VT, USA

Abstract

Conversion of carbon-rich biomass to useful combustible gas mixtures such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane by thermal gasification processes is a proved technology for energy production. In the gasification processes discussed in this chapter, conversion is achieved by reacting biomass with air (oxygen), steam, and carbon dioxide at elevated temperatures (>600 °C). To show how various gas mixtures can be produced and how heat is internally generated and managed, the chapter provides an introduction to the fundamental chemical and physical ...
