Chapter 21

Synthesis and Partial Characterization of Biodiesel via Base Catalyzed Transesterification

Abstract

On a small scale, students make biodiesel essentially as it is produced industrially. Transesterification of a triglyceride (soybean oil) to yield a fatty acid methyl ester (biodiesel) via a base catalyzed route provides a simple and effective hands-on demonstration of the synthesis and partial characterization of an alternative fuel for students ranging from high school to college seniors. The addition of more detailed characterization methods makes the experiment suitable for college-level chemistry majors.
