Environmental Effects on Natural Tissues

Abstract

The origins of aging are manifested in the form of compositional changes in tissue that can affect normal physiology. Examples that are presented include the deposition of plaques within arterial walls that lead to hypertension and other cardiovascular risks, age-related kidney disease that is essentially a cumulative plugging of the cardiovascular filtration system, chronic obesity, and osteoporosis which work in tandem to overstress the bones and joints of those who are both overweight and of advanced age. Aging also leads to a redistribution of subcutaneous fat that can lead to wrinkles, and there are also clearly differences in wound healing capacity with age as well. A critical assessment ...
