Chapter 7

Metallic Biomaterials

Abstract

The need to understand the phase space of metallic monolithic structures requires a detailed understanding of composition, structure, processing schemes, and properties that result. Themes are linked with alloy design, features of binary and ternary phase alloys, some sense of where these devices are used, primarily in replacing bone stock, joint repair, and fracture fixation. Increasingly, there is interest in softer, more flexible metal structures both to enhance bone viability and to augment where metallic biomaterials can be installed. Key features in this chapter are linked to understanding the correlation between structure and mechanical behavior.
