This first chapter is intended to set the frame for the entire book. The interwoven relations between biological matter and electrical phenomena will be discussed in a number of paradigmatic cases that will provide enough scope for introducing the concept of biomolecular electronics. The key results of biomolecular electronics to date will be reviewed in a critical fashion.
