In the present chapter we will consider paradigmatic cases in which the role of the redox state of certain molecular effectors (e.g., enzymes, cofactors, etc.) has been shown to be a determinant in modulating the gene expression level through a cascade of molecular interactions and events. We will consider only those cases in which the redox functionality has been shown in a robust, unequivocal way. These examples will serve as a starting point for the remainder of the book, where a novel approach will be suggested, based on direct electrochemistry, to influence those redox pathways in order to drive the phenomenon of gene expression at a technological level and, possibly, to alter in a predictable ...
