Abstract:

Efficient utilisation of the carbon source impacts significantly on the ability of the microorganism to maintain its cellular integretity, to grow and reproduce and, from the process perspective, to produce the desired product. Since the majority of industrial processes utilise chemo-heterotrophs, only metabolic pathways which utilise organic compounds as their carbon and energy sources will be considered here.
