Abstract:

Bioprocesses development is generally initiated on the laboratory scale and progressively scaled up to larger volumes at the pilot plant level, and finally, production scale. Transport phenomena are especially dependent on scale up, with phenomena such as oxygen transfer, mixing and shear stress altering with the process scale. Changes in these parameters invariably alter the microbial metabolism, thereby compromising kinetic parameters such as yields and productivities.
