Chapter 14. Getting around with BlackBerry GPS

Using GPS safely
Preparing to use GPS on your BlackBerry
Choosing a GPS application
A few years back when some of the network carriers in North America introduced GPS on their version of the BlackBerry, we were quite impressed …until we tried it. The response time was slow, and it wasn't accurate. On top of that, the network carriers charged users an arm and a leg for this inferior service. As it turns out, those GPS functions were implemented by using the network. What does that mean? There wasn't an actual GPS embedded in the BlackBerry. How low tech!
Today, the BlackBerry 8800 model comes with a GPS and works quite well. Even if you don't have the 8800, there are still ways to pair up your BlackBerry with an external GPS through Bluetooth. No matter how you look at it, it's hard to be lost with a BlackBerry in your hands.
Putting Safety First
Some GPS features are useful not only while you're walking on the street but also while you're driving a car. Although you'll be tempted to use your BlackBerry GPS while driving, we strongly suggest that you not adjust it while you're driving.
Before you start using BlackBerry GPS in your car, you need to get a BlackBerry car holder (preferably a car kit with a car charger) and resolve the BlackBerry backlight timeout issue.
You can buy a car kit on the Internet by doing a simple search for BlackBerry car kit. Or go to one of the following links:
