The pencil test

A pencil test cuts detail in favor of lots of quick drawings. This lets us see the motion of the character, then add details later:

  1. Start a new Grease Pencil scene. Rename the scene walk.
  2. Rename the two starting layers Ground and Draft. Draw a straight line on the Ground layer to put our walk-in context, then lock it.
  3. On the Adjustments tab for your pencil test layer, give it a Tint Color of light blue and a Factor of 1, turning your lines blue. Traditionally, pencil tests were drawn in blue pencil. When the drawings were inked, the blue would disappear after scanning.
  4. On the Draft layer, draw with the Draw Pencil with Active Smooth of 1 and Strength of .3. Loosely sketch in the first walk pose.
