Much of what we have discussed so far in this book really has primary roots in the world of filmmaking special effects, where artificial realities have been composed from various components in a post-production process. However, in the television world, chroma key compositing is primarily a live process that happens electronically in a switcher or Special Effects Generator (SEG) before the signal is recorded to tape. This process, operating off of the component signal directly from the camera, is in fact technically superior to any post process that deals with compressed video.
