Managing Patches
Effectively managing the patches installed on a system is essential to minimizing system downtime. Unfortunately, for system administrators responsible for a large number of systems, patch management may become a time-consuming task.
Sun patches are identified by a six-digit number followed by a hyphen and a two-digit patch revision number. While not all patches fall under these categories, Sun software patches are typically classified as follows:
Recommended– patches that Sun strongly recommends be installed.
Security– patches designed to implement enhanced or corrected security features of a product or software component.
