The actor/comic Paul Reubens began his career in the 1970s doing an “improv” act that was intended for adult audiences. In 1980, he developed a stage show, The Pee-wee Herman Show, which was filmed and aired on HBO in 1981. The character in that show, Pee-wee Herman, went on to become Reubens’ brand.
