A young child soon learns that life has its disappointments. We do not always get what we want, others do not always behave as we would like them to, and outcomes are sometimes—perhaps often—different from, or even at times the opposite of, what we desire. Many wise spiritual teachers, from the Buddha thousands of years ago through the present day, have gently, if persistently, reminded us of this truth.
