Network access providers are continually fighting the battle against becoming commoditized bandwidth providers. In the case of regulated local loops, what was once the domain of the incumbent provider for telephony and Internet access is being encroached by access seekers who are keen on providing cheaper and faster digital data delivery. Internet-based VoIP providers such as Skype and Vonage are also eroding the mainstay of most telcos’ bread and butter—PSTN calling minutes.
