Being Assertive

Alongside persuasion (more of which later), it is often also politic to adopt an assertive approach, while making sure that doing so is seen as acceptable. Be careful not to be too strident (it can give the wrong signals – of desperation, for instance), otherwise in communicating assertively it helps to:

•   Have the courage of your convictions: only a well-prepared case can be presented this way, and that means one that is positively put and that provides evidence – more than just I think or I say ...

•   Stick to your ground when challenged: and back up what you say with facts

•   Avoid circumspection: do not say perhaps we should ... when you mean we should certainly do ...

•   Use tone and manner to reinforce your intention: ...
