BUILDING FINISHES

26.1 INTRODUCTION

Building finishes comprise of plastering, pointing, painting, varnishing, white/colour washing or distempering. These finishes are performed to satisfy the following functions:

  1. These finishes primarily form protective coating to the exposed surface. This implies that the finishes preserve and protect the materials and thereby increase the life span of the materials.
  2. These finishes add to the aesthetic view of the building and form a sort of decorative item.

Plastering is performed in majority of the cases and pointing is preferred in stone masonry and brick-masonry built by machine-moulded bricks.
