Simple indexes are fine as long as you don’t want to look for anything that hasn’t been indexed. Unfortunately, most analysis and most searches extend well beyond the bounds of any predetermined indexes. When a more expansive analysis needs to be done, simple indexes will not suffice. Instead, the next step up is a document fractured index. In a document fractured index, everything is indexed (except stop words). Document fractured indexes require more resources to build and more storage than a simple index, but once having been built, a document fractured index can support very expansive types of analysis.
