A taxonomy, from a simplistic standpoint, is merely a list of words related to a single topic. Recall from Chapter 7 the simple taxonomy:

   CAR

   Porsche

   Volkswagen

   Cadillac

   Honda

   Ford

This simple taxonomy is a list of types of cars. One type of car is a Porsche, another type of car is a Ford, and so forth.

To say that there are almost an infinite number of taxonomies is not much of an exaggeration. Figure 8.1 shows a very small sample of the different types of taxonomies there are.
