Recursion occurs when one element in a hierarchical structure directly or indirectly refers to itself. The analysis done following a recursive structure becomes complicated because the system has to “remember” what has already been processed in order to not reprocess that same element. It is entirely possible for a recursive analytical process to get caught in an infinite loop.
