A data warehouse (DW) appliance is an integrated set of servers, storage, operating system, database and interconnect, specifically preconfigured and tuned for the rigors of data warehousing. What makes an appliance appealing? DW appliances offer an attractive price / performance value proposition and are frequently a fraction of the cost of traditional data warehouse solutions.

First generation data warehouse appliances were introduced in the late 1990s by Netezza. Today, the marketplace is seeing solutions from Oracle, HP, Microsoft, Teradata, AsterData, ParAccel, KickFire, Kognitio, Greenplum, Extremedata, Infobright, and other vendors.
