The need for integration of information is apparent and everyone is aware of the need. But most people have no idea where to start. Standard medical terminology is used wherever possible. But even with standardization of terms, there is still a need to a greater degree of integration. There are several factors that form a barrier to a high degree of integration:

·         HIPAA compliance. Access to records limits who can see and access records. Because of this impediment, it is difficult to share or move data freely across the organization.

·         Textual foundation. Much of the non financial information is in the form of text. Text does not lend itself to standardization in the world of databases.
