The Business intelligence systems of future will be minimally dependent on SQL based reporting and information retrieval. Instead the BI of future will be based on Semantic technologies where the metadata and the associated context will form the crux of search, information retrieval and reporting. For example if you are a business analyst at a large pizza chain, your query will be “Pizza’s sold yesterday” rather than “Select count(*) from sales where date = ‘dd/mm/yyyy’”.

Before we examine how we can utilize a combination of technologies to progress to that realm of BI, we will examine how legacy search works and its shortcomings.
