With the proliferation of applications came a new problem: the organization woke up one day and found that it had data everywhere. Unfortunately, that data appeared in more than one place and no one knew what the correct and accurate value of the data really was. One department had a value of $4,000 while another department had a value of $10,000 for the same unit of data. Making proper decisions based on the splintered, unintegrated data that resulted from the proliferation of applications was an exercise in futility.
