Another important transformation is recognizing that some words are synonyms or close synonyms. Figure 4.9 shows that the word “writing” has been recognized as a synonym of “signing”, “signatures” is a synonym of “autographs”, and that the replacement has been made.

Synonym replacement is not used often because it entails the destruction of the original raw text. In the example shown, if someone wanted to look for “autographs”, they would not be able to find the term since it has been replaced.
