An important parameter that can be specified is that of alternate spelling. Alternate spelling allows the system to find one word and write another index entry that is spelled differently. For example, suppose that the system encounters the word “Karen” and we want the system to alert the analyst that “Karen” can have more than one spelling. The analyst specifies in the alternate spelling table the names:

“Kairen”

“Karyn”

“Caryn”

“Caren”

as alternate spellings of “Karen”.

Now, when the system is in execution, and the system encounters the name “Karen”, the system inserts index entries for “Kairen”, “Karyn”, “Caryn”, and “Caren” as well. Now the analyst that searches the indexes will find all of the spellings of “Karen”. ...
