Another parametric control that can be specified is that of homographic resolution. Homographic resolution occurs when a mnemonic or abbreviation is used in the text and is “translated” into its actual meaning. In homographic resolution, a homograph and its resolved value are created. When the system encounters the homograph, the system reproduces the resolved value in the index, based on the context in which the raw text was found.
Figure 4.12 shows a form of homographic resolution in which the raw text contains the term “C4”. Based on the context of C4, the term is extended to its actual text meaning.
