4ANALYSE NEEDS

INTRODUCTION

Early approaches to business analysis used a systematic process for improving existing business systems. This typically involved analysing and documenting the existing situation and then adding in additional requirements that would solve current problems. Although this view of business analysis often gave rise to incremental improvement, it did not take account of broader stakeholder visions for the business system. As a result, the focus on addressing problems meant that greater opportunities were sometimes missed.

Over time business analysis work has evolved to take account of approaches based upon systemic thinking. The framework shown in Figure 4.1 reflects this.
