CHAPTER 8A Guide to Building Successful Social Media Campaigns

In this chapter I want to give you a very clear, practical guide to creating campaigns for each of the major social media platforms that are most popular at time of writing.

There are endless social media platforms and new ones are being created all the time. Social media started with platforms such as Friends Reunited and MySpace. Those were the platforms that started the trend and that were popular 10 years ago. Today, in 2017, these early platforms have been eclipsed by the major players. If you want to stay ahead of the competition in business, you must have a presence and an effective campaign on each of the following major six platforms. To remember the list (although we will discuss them in order of importance, rather than this order, below), I use the acronym FLY GTI, which stands for:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • YouTube
  • Google (in other words a Google account and Google+ account)
  • Twitter
  • Instagram

These are the main six platforms that, at the time of writing, I believe are essential – in other words, not optional – for your business. There are many other platforms and apps available, such as blog host Tumblr (owned by Yahoo! and according to statistics at time of writing hosting over 400 million blogs and attracting 555 million monthly visitors) and messaging application Snapchat (with its 166 million daily active users, according to statistics published at time of writing), but I think these are optional rather than ...
