Know How Business Works; Understand Specialization and Cooperation

There is a widespread belief among the general population that business is unfair. Maybe you have met people who believe this. These misguided souls believe that business is inherently unfair simply because they see some people who do better in business than others. They assume that anyone who has more must be greedy. Business is bad, these naysayers of capitalism suppose, because it rewards greed. If you are reading this book, it is safe to say that you do not hold similar views. But many do. Ask people in your various circles about this and you may be shocked at how many buy into this misguided notion. They believe this because they do not understand what business really is. They believe it because they have not put in the effort to find out how business really works. If they were to put in the effort, they would see business, at least as it exists in free-market economies predominately in the West, for the meritocracy that it is.

Many books have been written that examine why some nations work better than others. To name a few: The Wealth and Poverty of Nations, by scholar David Landes; Why Nations Fail, by James A. Robinson; Civilization: The West and the Rest, by Niall Ferguson; and Guns, Germs, and Steel, by Jared Diamond.
