Develop All Four Dimensions of Your Life Simultaneously
From the previous chapter, you may get the wrong idea that I overvalue work and undervalue other aspects of life, such as family, friends, and hobbies. This couldn't be further from the truth. I have a wonderful family whom I love and enjoy spending time with. I cultivate as many friendships as I can, as I have suggested you do earlier in this book. I am an avid boater; boating is one of my greatest passions and joys in life. But this book is called Business Secrets from the Bible, not Boating Secrets from the Bible or Hobbyist Secrets from the Bible. The instructional focus here is on developing your professional life. We are talking about your work life here, not your personal life, and at work, you work. Period.
However, do understand that you cannot, in life, focus on only one aspect of yourself. You must develop all aspects simultaneously.
In Hebrew, there is a word that means ladder: S-L-M. And there's another word that is the word that follows ladder—or, put differently, the word that ladder leads phonetically toward. This word is: SH-L-M. This word means totality, completion, and peace. The idea is that the ladder, the route upwards, must lead to completion … completion of everything. That means all aspects of your life must be complete. You cannot succeed in business unless you have met all of your needs, not just your professional needs.
