Giving Money Away Automatically Connects Us with Other People
If you have read this far, you understand that making connections with other people is crucial to your career and the health of the overall economy. Charity is an incredibly good tool for connecting with others, perhaps the best.
In the Book of Leviticus, chapter 4, there are five separate places in a span of 27 verses where Scripture informs us what happens when someone sins. Leviticus (4:2) is about what happens when a person sins. In Leviticus (4:3) we are told what happens when a priest sins. In the third case, Leviticus (4:13), we see what happens when an entire congregation sins. Leviticus (4:22) tells us what happens if a ruler or king sins. The fifth and final mention, Leviticus (4:27), tells us what happens if “one among the people” sins. This last one may catch your eye: how is the fifth mention any different from the first? What distinction is the Scripture drawing between “a person” who sins and “one among the people” who sins? They sound similar, but they are not. The distinction is lost in translation from the Hebrew.
The three Hebrew words for “if” are: KeY, IM, and ASHeR. We use the word KeY (pronounced key) when the conditional is likely to occur. The word IM (pronounced em) is used when the conditional is possible, but unlikely to occur. The final word, ASHeR (pronounced osher), is reserved for when the conditional is a certainty.
