Retirement Is Unhealthy
I have known many people who could not wait to retire. They worked their whole lives and were at the peak of their physical and mental health. Then they hit age 65 and retired immediately. They got their gold watch and enjoyed their retirement party and quit working. Then, they received Social Security and drew down their savings, if they had any. Almost instantly, their health began to decline. Sometimes, to combat a deep depression, a few retirees will go back to work just to have something to do, to have a way to meet and connect with people as they did when they were working. Suddenly, they feel good again.
The bottom line is this: Retirement is unhealthy, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The New England Journal of Medicine has published many articles over the years that correlate faith and prayer with good health. There is an observable connection. This does not bode well for retirees because it is a tough thing to ask for God's help in maintaining your health when you are not even working. On what basis do you ask God for help and good health when you are not out there every day helping His other children? You can't. This is one reason why so many people's lives deteriorate when they quit working and they no longer have the structure and discipline that working provides.
