Whereas Chapter 3, “Creating Charts That Show
Trends,” is concerned with the progression of a
trend over time, this chapter focuses on demon-
strating the differences between entities. For exam-
ple, you could use Excel charts to compare each
sales region versus the others or your company ver-
sus the competitors.
When you want to compare the differences among
a handful of entities, a bar chart is the perfect
choice. The reader can easily see the differences
between the entities.
The only time you should use a pie chart is when
you want to show how components add up to a
whole entity
