9. Enable Prosperity Ecosystems

Miracle in Tunisia

Tunisia has succeeded where most African nations have failed. Fifty years after its independence, Tunisia has emerged as a beacon of prosperity and stability. This natural resource “poor” nation now boasts a per capita income of $7,100, one of the highest in Africa. In the Arab world, Tunisia also stands out for its openness and modernity.

Tunisia’s biggest current challenge is to speed its economic growth rate. The country’s leadership chose Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a key growth driver. Early results are encouraging: ICT’s share of the nation’s GDP has more than doubled from 4.5 percent in 2002 to 10 percent in 2008 and is poised to reach 13.5 percent in 2011.
