Antidepressants: sad, bad or dangerous to know?

When stimulant medication is ineffective, other drugs are considered. Antidepressants are sometimes used as an alternative for treating ADHD.

Some older antidepressant drugs have been found to have some effects on ADHD. Newer antidepressants do not have an effect on impulsivity or inattention, though.

Although some antidepressants can help with symptoms of ADHD, they are less effective than stimulants and so are not used as first-line drug treatment. Hyperactivity improves with certain antidepressants, and there are also some beneficial effects on impulsivity, and a minimal effect on attention.
