Bovine spongiform encephalitis: the case of an unexpected and rapidly spreading epidemic in cattle with serious consequences

A case involving a misfolded protein that caused a serious epidemic in cattle and, much later also in humans, is detailed. The case is followed throughout the whole food chain and discusses how changes in feed technology may have had an impact on the prevalence of the infectious agent and on human exposure.
