Millions of dollars have been invested in food safety research to reduce foodborne illness caused by deadly bacteria. Despite research and huge investments, millions of consumers worldwide are still at risk. The CDC estimates that some 76 million Americans become sick from food-related illnesses each year, and approximately 325 000 of these are hospitalized.
