Network-Based (Fabric-Based) Virtualization

A network-based virtualization is a fabric-based switch infrastructure. The SAN fabric provides connectivity to heterogeneous server platforms and heterogeneous storage arrays and tape subsystems. Fabric may be composed of multiple switches from different vendors; the virtualization capabilities require standardized protocols to ensure interoperability between fabric-hosted virtualization engines. Fabric-based storage virtualization dynamically interacts with virtualizers on arrays, servers, or appliances.
