FCoE-NPV is an enhancement of FIP snooping functionality that provides a secure method to connect FCoE-capable hosts to an FCoE Fibre Channel Forwarder switch. With FCoE-NPV, much like with FIP snooping, Unified Fabric access layer switches, such as Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switches, do not run Fibre Channel services and instead upstream aggregation layer switches, such as Cisco Nexus 7000 Series switches operating in FCoE N_Port ID Virtualization (FCoE-NPIV) mode, and handle storage traffic forwarding and services.
