The VMware Virtual Distributed Switch (vDS) was introduced with VMware vSphere 4. As opposed to managing static vSwitches on every ESX or ESXi host, the vDS brings the capability to configure and manage a collection of vSwitches in an ESX or ESXi host or multiple hosts within a VMware Cluster. This can be achieved from a central location, via the VMware vCenter Server. Figure 18-11 shows a graphical overview of a VMware vDS versus standard vSwitches architecture.
