Another type of identity store supported by Cisco ISE is with the use of smart cards. Smart cards use embedded integrated circuits that then can be used as forms of identification. That identification can be used as a method authentication for secure network access control systems.

Common access card (CAC) is another term used to refer to smart cards that allow users to use their identification badges to authenticate. The end user inserts his CAC into a card reader and then enters his PIN. Again, you have to “have something” and “know something” for the authentication to be valid.
