In the past decade, much has been written on the problem of the uptake and maintenance of safer sex among gay and bisexual men. There is, in this voluminous literature, a dominant paradigm that incorporates and empowers ‘a particular discourse of sex and sexuality which is empirical, epidemiological and atomistic’. Project SIGMA’s1 work in this area has involved the development of an approach to the understanding of sexual behaviour in general, and unsafe behaviour in particular, which is theoretically informed, humanistic and holistic in scope and based on the simple insight that sex is interpersonal and interactive.
